Not every calorie is counted the same.

 

“Empty calorie” is a term that describe foods that supply food energy but little to no other nutritional value. They are often composed of sugar, fats or oils and lack vital vitamins, minerals, protein, fibre, or essential fatty acids.

 

In consuming the same number of calories, a person can suffer from a lack of essential micro-nutrients, while another is nourishing their bodies for a disease-free and active lifestyle.

 

This is why we must make every calorie count. To do so, we want to select foods that offer maximum nutritional benefits for minimal calories. In other words, we want to eat super foods.

 

Super foods have a very high nutritional density, providing a substantial amount of nutrients with very few calories. They are often plant-based due to a high level of phytochemicals (nutrients converted with the sun through photosynthesis) that increases their volume of minerals, vitamins, and antioxidants.

 

Common superfoods include berries, soy, tea, and leafy greens. Incorporating multiple superfoods regularly into your diet, a “super diet,” will help prevent coronary heart disease and cancer, as well as improving immunity and decreasing inflammation. They can also help maintain a healthy weight.
